Active Attack = Mass Murder – One or more people actively engaging in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area. Active attacks are not confined to firearms; these individuals can use knives, cars, or any other method available to them. Active attack situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter situation until law enforcement can arrive.
Good Practices for Coping with an Active Attack Situation:
- Be aware of your environment and any possible dangers.
- Situational Awareness/Perceived Threat – Know what is going on around you. Watch for potential threats.
- Take note of the nearest exits in any facility you visit.
If in an Office or Enclosed Area:- Shelter in Place
- Close and Secure/Barricade Doors
- Exit Immediately if Possible
If in a Hallway:- Find a Room and Secure/Barricade Doors
- Exit Immediately if Possible
Last Resort Measures:- Attempt to Engage the Attacker & Take them Down
- Use any measures at hand--obtain weapons if possible and continue to engage until the attacker is no longer a threat, they have been incapacitated, and you have a chance to escape the situation safely.
- Be aware of the potential for multiple attackers.
